Several passengers found themselves stranded when 78 Air India Express flights were abruptly canceled due to mass sick leave taken by senior crew members overnight. While the airline assured passengers of full refunds or complimentary rescheduling, many complained of a lack of updates regarding their refunds.
Passengers at airports in Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, and elsewhere faced challenges including food shortages, inadequate restroom facilities, and delays in receiving refunds. Prema Eknath Patel, an elderly woman, expressed dismay over the lack of basic amenities, highlighting the distressing experience of enduring long hours without access to restrooms.
Another passenger voiced concerns about mismanagement, noting inconsistencies in staff shifts and inadequate assistance in addressing passenger grievances. He recounted the frustration of facing flight cancellations without clear explanations and the inconvenience of inaccessible restroom facilities, particularly for elderly passengers.
Additionally, passengers reported not receiving refunds despite flight cancellations, prompting further frustration and dissatisfaction. Despite the airline's apology for the inconvenience caused, passengers expressed disappointment over the lack of timely assistance and resolution.
In Thiruvananthapuram Airport, passengers faced similar challenges, with flights to Muscat canceled, leaving travelers grappling with urgent travel needs and medical emergencies. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has intervened, seeking a report from Air India Express and urging prompt resolution of the issues.
Furthermore, the Regional Labour Commissioner criticized Air India Express for mismanagement and labor law violations, emphasizing the need for corrective action. The underlying cause of the flight cancellations was reportedly discontent among crew members over salary-related issues following restructuring efforts.
The situation underscores the importance of effective management and communication within airlines to ensure the smooth operation of flights and the well-being of passengers and staff alike.
