Actor Suriya criticizes the ban policy and labels the Tamil Nadu hooch issue as "alarming"

In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, renowned actor Suriya condemned the Tamil Nadu administration for its failure to curb the sale of illicit liquor amidst the tragic Kallakurichi hooch incident, which has now claimed 53 lives.

Suriya, acclaimed for his roles in movies such as 'Soorarai Pottru' and 'Jai Bhim', also urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to consider implementing a prohibition policy across the state.

The actor emphasized that prohibition often ends up being merely an "election slogan" for political parties.

"I trust that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will make decisions in the best interest of the people regarding the prohibition policy," expressed the Tamil actor and film producer.

Describing the incident as "disturbing," Suriya lamented that over a hundred people remained hospitalized, and the deaths and suffering of the victims were deeply poignant.

"An event with 50 fatalities in a small town is a tragedy that rivals natural disasters like storms, rain, and floods," he added.

Recalling the Villupuram hooch tragedy, which claimed 22 lives last year, Suriya asserted that a short-term solution would not suffice for a long-standing problem.

"The government had pledged to take decisive action. Yet, people have lost their lives after consuming the same lethal alcohol laced with methanol in a neighbouring district. It is disheartening that no significant change has been seen to date," he remarked.

Highlighting the dire circumstances, the actor pointed out, "Addicts who typically spend Rs 150 at TASMAC end up buying illicit liquor for Rs 50 when they lack funds."

Nonetheless, Suriya acknowledged the government's and administration's efforts to mitigate such tragedies.

Advocating immediate measures, Suriya called for the establishment of rehabilitation centers in every district. "Just as the government implements visionary plans for students' educational progress, similar programs should be devised and implemented for the rehabilitation of individuals struggling with alcoholism," he stressed.
