In Chhattisgarh, a 30-year-old man named Pandey, a BJP supporter, made headlines by chopping off his finger and offering it at a Kali temple following the BJP-led NDA's victory in the Lok Sabha election. Pandey, distressed by initial trends showing Congress in the lead, made a vow at the temple, which is highly revered in his village.
After the BJP's victory was confirmed, Pandey fulfilled his vow by severing his finger and offering it at the temple. He tried to stop the bleeding by tying a cloth around the wound, but the bleeding worsened. His family rushed him to the Community Health Centre in Samari, where emergency first aid was administered. Due to the severity of the injury, he was referred to Ambikapur Medical College.Â
At the medical college, doctors performed an operation to stop the bleeding, but they could not reattach the severed part of his finger due to the delay in treatment. Despite this, Pandey's condition is now stable and he is out of danger.
Pandey expressed his devotion and the reason for his drastic action, stating, "I was disturbed to see the Congress leading in the initial trends. The Congress supporters were very excited. I visited the Kali temple in my village, which the entire village has faith in. I also had faith in it and made a vow. When the BJP was winning the elections that evening, I went to the temple, chopped my finger and offered it. The BJP will now form the government, but I would have been happier if they (NDA) crossed the 400 mark."
The closely-fought election saw the NDA win 293 of 543 Lok Sabha seats, with support from allies like TDP's N Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar. The Opposition INDIA bloc performed strongly, winning 234 seats. Narendra Modi is set to take oath as Prime Minister for a record third time on Sunday evening in a ceremony expected to be attended by foreign leaders.
