After a week, a missing Indian student in California was discovered safe

A 23-year-old Indian student, Nitheesha Kandula, who went missing in California last week, has been found safe, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Nitheesha, a student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), had been missing since May 28 in Los Angeles, raising concerns within the community and prompting a police search. John Guttierez, Chief of Police at CSUSB, announced her safety on social media, stating, "The missing student identified in this bulletin who was reported missing on May 28, 2024, in Los Angeles, has been located and is safe!" No further details about her whereabouts were disclosed.

Police had previously issued a public appeal for information on Nitheesha's location, noting that she had been driving a California-licensed Toyota Corolla. Nitheesha, from Hyderabad, is among several Indian students in the US recently reported missing, which has alarmed the Indian community.

Last month, 26-year-old Rupesh Chandra Chintakind, another Indian student, went missing in Chicago. In a more tragic case, Mohammad Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, was found dead in Cleveland in April after being missing since March. Arfath had come to the US in May of the previous year to pursue a Master's in IT from Cleveland University.
