As 300 people in Kochi become ill from tainted water, the health minister vows to take action


Kerala Health Minister Veena George addressed concerns on Tuesday regarding nearly 300 residents of DLF New Town Heights Flats in Kochi reporting symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, stating that stringent measures would be implemented in response.

Reportedly, approximately 300 residents of DLF New Town Heights Flats in Kakkanad, Kochi fell ill, allegedly due to consuming contaminated water.

George emphasized the severity of the issue and assured that appropriate actions would follow under the provisions of the Public Health Protection Act.

Highlighting the initial notification, George mentioned that a resident contacted the government helpline on Monday, prompting immediate intervention by the health department director.

"A specialized team from the health department promptly visited the location and initiated necessary steps," George affirmed.

"All drinking water sources within the residential complex will undergo thorough scrutiny. The health department may not have been aware initially, as affected individuals sought treatment from various hospitals. This aspect is also under investigation," she added.

Furthermore, the Minister advised residents to exclusively utilize boiled water for drinking purposes as a precautionary measure.
