Hyderabad, previously the shared capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, has now become the exclusive capital of Telangana. This change took effect on June 2, 2024, marking the end of Hyderabad's decade-long status as a common capital, as stipulated by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
The bifurcation of the undivided Andhra Pradesh occurred in 2014, leading to the creation of the state of Telangana on June 2, 2014. According to the AP Reorganisation Act, Hyderabad was designated the common capital for both states for a maximum of ten years. After this period, the act required Hyderabad to serve solely as the capital of Telangana, while Andhra Pradesh was to establish a new capital.
The formation of Telangana culminated in a long-standing demand for statehood, realized when the AP Reorganisation bill was passed by Parliament in February 2014, and the new state officially came into existence on June 2, 2014.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently instructed officials to reclaim buildings such as the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad, which were allocated to Andhra Pradesh for ten years. Despite the separation, numerous issues, including the bifurcation of assets, remain unresolved between the two states.
Efforts to address these bifurcation-related issues at a cabinet meeting were thwarted as the Election Commission allegedly did not approve the meeting due to the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.
