Atishi says Haryana cut back on water delivery to the capital during the water crisis in Delhi

Delhi Water Minister Atishi has accused the Haryana government of conspiring against Delhi by reducing the water supply to the national capital over the past three days. This accusation follows a Supreme Court directive to the Himachal Pradesh government to release 137 cusecs of surplus water to Delhi, with Haryana facilitating its flow, and the court emphasizing that there should be no politics over water.

Atishi expressed her concerns on social media platform X, stating, "Conspiracy by Haryana exposed! Hon'ble Supreme Court is trying to resolve Delhi's water crisis, but Haryana is conspiring against the people of Delhi. While the case was being heard in Supreme Court, Haryana has been steadily reducing the water being released to Delhi in the last 3 days...." She announced plans to visit the Wazirabad barrage at 11 am to assess the water situation.

Atishi highlighted that the increased water demand due to the heatwave has been exacerbated by decreased water levels in the Yamuna, affecting water production. She noted, "Last year, there was 674.5 ft of water in the Wazirabad pond... Despite so many requests, only 671 ft of water has been released... All water treatment plants are being affected due to low levels of water in the Wazirabad barrage... We have requested Haryana and UP government to release more water..," as reported by ANI.

Last week, the Delhi government petitioned the Supreme Court for additional water supply from neighboring states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, citing increased demand due to the heatwave. In response to the water shortage, the Delhi government implemented emergency measures, including banning the use of potable water for car washing and at construction sites and imposing a Rs 2,000 fine on anyone found wasting water.
