Congress defeats AAP, India's ally, in a "friendly fight" in Punjab

The Congress emerged victorious in six seats and was leading in one in Punjab. Its ally in India, AAP, which had opted to contest independently in the Lok Sabha elections, only managed to secure victory in three seats.

The electoral landscape in Punjab was highly competitive, with Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal vying for the 13 Lok Sabha seats. The addition of Independent candidates added an element of surprise to the mix.

The final outcome of the elections reflected this intense competition.

Congress succeeded in securing six seats in the border state. AAP, the partner of the INDIA bloc, which had previously won in the Assembly polls two years ago, chose to contest independently in Punjab. However, AAP faced a significant defeat at the hands of its INDIA bloc partner.

Aam Aadmi Party emerged victorious in three seats.

On the other hand, Shiromani Akali Dal, which had separated from the BJP, only managed to win one seat. Harsimrat Kaur Badal emerged victorious in Bathinda, defeating AAP candidate Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Congress’s Jeetmohinder Sidhu.

Additionally, two Independent candidates, Amrtipal Singh and Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, secured victories in Khadoor Sahib and Faridkot respectively.

Amritpal Singh, the chief of Waris Punjab De, is currently in an Assam jail after being arrested in April last year. The separatist leader is facing charges under the National Security Act (NSA). His father, Tarsem Singh, stated that he contested the election at the behest of his supporters.

Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, the other Independent candidate who won in Punjab, is the son of one of the assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sarabjit Singh faced multiple defeats in the past 20 years in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls before finally securing victory in this election.

In contrast, the BJP failed to secure any seats in Punjab in this election.
