Delhi will experience the monsoon in the next two to three days: Department of Weather

Meteorological conditions indicate that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance further into Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two to three days, according to the weather department. After enduring over a month of a scorching heatwave, residents of the national capital can anticipate relief as the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by the end of this week.

The weather department has observed favorable conditions for the southwest monsoon to progress further into the aforementioned regions in the coming days. Experts have noted that the recent rain in Delhi-NCR constitutes pre-monsoon showers.

In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for light rain over the next few days in Delhi. On their social media platform, the IMD stated, "Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi is likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 28th & 29th June 2024."

The timely arrival of the monsoon is critical for agrarian communities, as it helps replenish groundwater levels and supports agricultural activities, which are vital for the economy. This widespread advance of the monsoon is particularly important for northern India's agrarian economy, bringing much-needed rainfall for Kharif crops such as paddy, cotton, and soybeans.

The weather department also mentioned that Delhi's weather has been fluctuating due to a western disturbance over the past few days. According to news agency ANI, the national capital is expected to experience moderate to heavy rain on June 30.

On Wednesday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above normal. Delhi has been suffering from an intense heatwave, recording nine heatwave days so far this month, compared to none in 2023 and 2022. In June 2021, the city recorded one heatwave day, according to IMD data.
