Elon Musk's social media platform X is gearing up to host town hall meetings featuring former US President Donald Trump and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ahead of the November 5 presidential elections. This move marks Trump's return to the platform three years after being suspended in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riots.
During the live-streamed event, Trump will field questions submitted by users, and the event will also be broadcast in partnership with cable channel NewsNation. Similarly, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running for president as an independent candidate, will also participate in a town hall on the platform.
Although details such as the date, location, and moderators for these town halls have yet to be finalized, the events promise to be significant, according to Musk. NewsNation hosts and other journalists are likely to serve as moderators for these discussions.
It's worth noting that while Trump and Kennedy Jr. were participating in these town halls, US President Joe Biden declined an invitation from the social media company to engage in a debate or town hall.
Musk's platform has been making efforts to court conservative politicians, evident in its hosting of events like a Q&A session with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis when he announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination.
This move underscores Musk's influence in shaping the landscape of social media and his efforts to provide a platform for diverse political voices, even as he has expressed dissatisfaction with President Biden.
