Floods in Manipur: Assam Rifles and disaster management help those who are stuck

Several teams from Assam Rifles and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted round-the-clock operations in flood-hit Manipur to provide relief materials and evacuate stranded people due to the heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Remal.

Manipur experienced severe flooding following torrential rains, although water levels have receded in the Imphal and Nambul rivers. Teams from the 37th and 33rd Assam Rifles and NDRF personnel were deployed in the Nagaram area in Imphal to carry out relief operations.

NDRF commander Anandh Patel stated that his team responded immediately to calls for help from affected residents. Assam Rifles personnel used motorboats to navigate flooded localities, delivering essential items such as food and medicine to those in need.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tweeted about the ongoing efforts to remove floodwater and clear waterlogged areas. He mentioned that Manipur Fire Service teams had begun work to de-clog obstructions and restore the flow of the Naga River at North AOC Imphal.

Nagaram, one of the flooded localities, is known for being densely populated. Although many residents have moved to community centers, some have remained. Grace, a resident, returned to Nagaram to retrieve essentials from her house with assistance from Assam Rifles. Solan, a 17-year-old resident, chose to stay behind to look after his home while his family moved to a safer location.

Cyclone Remal made landfall in Manipur last week, leading to the flooding of rivers and inundating several areas. Three people have died, and over a lakh have been affected by the floods in the state.
