Assam's Home Secretary, Siladitya Chetia, allegedly died by suicide in a private hospital in Guwahati after his wife passed away following a prolonged illness on Tuesday, according to police reports. Chetia, a 2009-batch IPS officer, reportedly used his service weapon to shoot himself inside the ICU where his wife had died.
Siladitya Chetia had a distinguished career in the Assam Police, serving as the Superintendent of Police in Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts and as the commandant of the 4th Battalion of the Assam Police before he was appointed the state's home secretary.
His wife had been suffering from a brain tumour and had been admitted to the hospital for several months before her death.
