Heatwave grips North India, with rain expected in the south and northeast until June 19

The weather conditions across India have been starkly divided, with severe heatwave conditions persisting in parts of north and central India, while southern, eastern, and northeastern regions are expected to receive significant rainfall until June 19, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

### Heatwave Conditions:
- **Affected Regions**: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, parts of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu division, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, parts of Punjab, West Bengal, and Bihar.
- **Alerts**: IMD has issued orange and red alerts for Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for the next five days due to maximum temperatures ranging from 44-46 degrees Celsius.
- **Duration**: Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist in these regions between June 15 and 19, with isolated pockets experiencing similar conditions in adjacent areas.

### Rainfall Predictions:
- **Affected Regions**: Southern, western, eastern, and northeastern India.
- **Intensity**: Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Meghalaya from June 15 to 19, and in Assam from June 17 to 19.
- **Other Regions**: Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is predicted in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha during the next five days.
- **Isolated Heavy Rainfall**: Likely over Odisha between June 17 and 19, east Bihar on June 18 and 19, Marathwada on June 16 and 17, Konkan, Goa, Kerala, Mahe from June 17 to 19, North coastal Andhra Pradesh, north interior Karnataka on June 17, and Madhya Maharashtra on June 18 and 19.

### Southwest Monsoon Progress:
- **Current Status**: The Southwest Monsoon has been progressing slowly, contributing to prolonged heatwave conditions in north and central India.
- **Deficit**: IMD reports a 4% deficit in cumulative monsoon rainfall across the country for the first 12 days of the season, with northwest India experiencing a significant 53% deficit.
- **Contrast**: Southern India has received 60% more rainfall than usual during the period from June 1 to 12.
- **Future Outlook**: The monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by around June 27, with favorable conditions anticipated for its further advance into parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Bihar over the next four to five days.

The contrasting weather patterns highlight the ongoing challenges faced by different regions of India due to the delayed onset and progress of the Southwest Monsoon, influencing both extreme heat and anticipated relief through rainfall.
