An AIADMK member, Suresh Kumar, aged 40, has been arrested in Salem, Tamil Nadu, for brewing spurious liquor. This arrest occurred as part of a statewide crackdown by the police aimed at locating and dismantling illegal distilleries following the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 53 people.
AIADMK general secretary Edapadi K. Palanisamy clarified that Suresh Kumar had joined the AIADMK from the DMK in 2018 but later left the party. Palanisamy emphasized that irrespective of party affiliation, all individuals involved in such illegal activities must be "punished."
Police sources revealed that Suresh Kumar had multiple pending cases related to the possession and sale of spurious liquor. During routine patrolling in Attur, the police discovered Kumar's illicit liquor operation near Manapachi village. They destroyed the liquor, arrested Kumar, and remanded him in custody.
The police have charged Suresh Kumar under Sections 4(1)(a), 4(1-A) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act, and Section 329 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Meanwhile, the AIADMK continued their protest in the state assembly on Tuesday over the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. Their actions led to a one-day suspension for allegedly causing disruption by attempting to raise slogans during the Question Hour.
Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin reminded the assembly that the issue had already been thoroughly debated, and he had outlined the government's response to the tragedy. He accused the AIADMK, Tamil Nadu's main Opposition party, of engaging in "planned activities" due to their inability to accept defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
