The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally reappointed Ajit Doval, a retired IPS officer, as the National Security Adviser (NSA), effective from June 10, 2024. Concurrently, Dr. P.K. Mishra, a retired IAS officer, has been reinstated as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister under the same terms.
The appointments, as specified by government orders, will continue until the completion of PM Modi's term or until further directives are issued. Ajit Doval, belonging to the 1968 batch of IPS officers, initially assumed the role of NSA on May 31, 2014.
In his capacity as National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval oversees the National Security Council (NSC), advising the Prime Minister on matters concerning national and international security. His appointment comes with the rank of Cabinet Minister, with specific terms and conditions to be formally notified.
Born on January 20, 1945, in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, Ajit Doval has had a distinguished career in the Indian Police Service, earning accolades such as the Kirti Chakra in 1988 for his exceptional service. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest recipient of the Indian Police Medal.
The position of the NSA was initially established in 1998, particularly in response to the nuclear tests conducted by India at that time, underscoring its critical role in the nation's security architecture.
