"PM should follow Mohan Bhagwat's guidance": Disapproval of the RSS chief's Manipur statement

The Opposition has expressed support for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's recent remarks on prioritizing the resolution of the Manipur conflict, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to heed Bhagwat's advice. Addressing an event in Nagpur, Bhagwat emphasized the importance of restoring peace in Manipur, noting the state's decade-long tranquility before the resurgence of violence. He stressed the need to move beyond election rhetoric and address pressing national issues.

Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh, hoped that Bhagwat's words would influence PM Modi. Ramesh referenced former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's advice to Modi 22 years ago about fulfilling his "rajdharma." Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal criticized PM Modi, suggesting that while Modi may ignore opposition advice, he should listen to Bhagwat. Sibal also raised concerns about the inability to remove Manipur's Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Supriya Sule of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction echoed the need for urgent action in Manipur, highlighting the ongoing violence and its impact on citizens. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi expressed skepticism that PM Modi would heed Bhagwat's words, accusing Modi of avoiding the issue and misusing law enforcement.

The Manipur conflict has seen intermittent violence since May last year, following clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The unrest began after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' protesting the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. This followed tensions over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to a series of smaller protests. The violence has resulted in over 180 deaths.

In summary, the Opposition is urging PM Modi to act on Bhagwat's call for prioritizing peace in Manipur, reflecting a broader concern about the handling of the state's ongoing conflict.
