A 13-year-old boy has been identified as the individual who sent a bomb threat email to the Delhi Airport on June 4, targeting an Air Canada flight (AC43) from Delhi to Toronto, according to Delhi Police. The threat was later confirmed to be a hoax.
Upon investigation, police discovered that the email account used to send the threat was created only an hour before the email was sent. The email originated from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. When authorities traced and located the source, it was revealed that a 13-year-old boy was behind the email. He admitted to sending the email after being inspired by news reports about a bomb threat on a Mumbai flight. The boy explained that he wanted to see if the police could trace his email, sending the threat purely for amusement.
The boy had created a fake email ID on his phone and used his mother’s phone for internet access to send the threat email. After sending the email, he deleted it but became frightened the next morning when he saw news reports about the bomb threat on television. He did not disclose his actions to his family out of fear.
Usha Rangnani, Deputy Commissioner of Police, IGI Airport, stated that the police have seized the boy’s phone and are providing counseling. The boy was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and has since been returned to his parents.
The incident caused significant disruption on June 4 when the Air Canada flight received the bomb threat email. The flight, scheduled to take off at 10:50 pm, was diverted to an isolation bay for a thorough security screening to ensure passenger safety.
