Police in Pune said a lady who was discovered dead in a water tanker had mental illness

In Pune's Phursungi area, a woman's lifeless body was discovered inside a water tanker on Thursday. The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Kaushalya Mukesh Chavan. Her body was found when water was being released from the tanker near the Phursungi power station.

The discovery occurred when local residents began filling their containers with water from the tanker. However, the water flow abruptly stopped after some time. Investigating the cause, the tanker driver found a piece of sari obstructing the outlet. Upon opening the tanker lid, he was horrified to find the body of a woman inside.

The police have initiated an investigation to determine whether the woman died by suicide or was murdered. Notably, there were no visible injury marks on her body. The precise cause of death will be established after the post-mortem report is completed, according to the police.

Earlier that morning, Kaushalya had gone to a building where the tanker driver lives, with the tanker parked nearby. Authorities are still trying to ascertain whether she accidentally fell into the tanker or deliberately jumped in.

Kaushalya was a resident of Dugad Chawl, located near JSPM College in Handewadi. She lived with her husband, who is employed as a flooring installer, and their two children. The family had recently relocated from Uttar Pradesh to Pune, just a month prior to the incident, as reported by police inspector Mansingh Patil.

A few days before her body was found, Kaushalya had been reported missing, and a missing person report was filed at Kondhwa Police Station. The police suspect that she might have been suffering from a mental illness, as she had received treatment from local doctors and a village priest.
