President of the Maldives feels "honoured" by India's invitation to Narendra Modi's swearing-in

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his honor and acceptance to attend Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term. Muizzu's visit signifies a positive direction for bilateral ties between the Maldives and India, which have been strained since Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, took office.

The invitation was formally extended by India's Higher Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, during a courtesy call at the President's Office. President Muizzu, along with the country's foreign minister and other leaders, will travel to New Delhi for the event. This visit will mark Muizzu's first trip to India as President.

Despite initial tensions, including Muizzu's demand for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, the invitation and subsequent acceptance highlight a potential thaw in relations. Earlier, President Muizzu congratulated Modi on his election victory, expressing his eagerness to advance mutual interests.

The guest list for Modi's swearing-in, guided by India's "Neighbourhood First Policy," includes leaders from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan. The ceremony, set for Sunday evening at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, will see President Droupadi Murmu administering the oath of office and secrecy to the Prime Minister and other members of the Union Council of Ministers.
