Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to keep the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat and is expected to resign from the Wayanad seat in Kerala, as confirmed by party sources. This decision follows his victory in both constituencies in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
During the Congress Working Committee meeting, leaders were divided on which seat Rahul Gandhi should retain. Kerala MPs, including Kodikkunnil Suresh, advocated for Wayanad, but the majority supported Raebareli. Aradhana Mishra, the Congress Legislative Party leader from Uttar Pradesh, emphasized the historical significance of Raebareli to the Gandhi family and its importance for Congress's political revival in Uttar Pradesh.
Raebareli has been a Congress stronghold since 1952, with Sonia Gandhi representing the seat from 2004 to 2019 before passing it to Rahul Gandhi for the 2024 election, where he defeated BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh by 3,90,030 votes. In Wayanad, he defeated CPI’s Annie Raja with a margin of 3,64,422 votes.
Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Raebareli next week along with Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. A final decision on the matter is expected before June 17.
