Newly elected Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha MP Amritpal Singh's family has submitted a plea for his temporary release or parole to allow him to take the oath as MP, which is a constitutional requirement for all Members of Parliament, sources informed India Today on Saturday.
Amritpal Singh's family members traveled to Assam's Dibrugarh to complete the necessary legal formalities before filing the plea with the local District Magistrate for his temporary release. According to legal experts, this plea will require approval from the jail authorities following the District Magistrate's recommendation.
After meeting with Amritpal Singh, his father expressed their happiness about his election victory, stating, "We are very happy that our son has won the elections. We have come to meet him so that he will also feel happy that people love him and elected him by such a huge margin."
Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat by 1,97,120 votes, defeating Congress's Kulbir Singh Zira, with AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar coming in third. As an independent candidate, Amritpal polled 4,04,430 votes, while Zira received 2,07,310 votes, and Bhullar garnered 1,94,836 votes.
Amritpal and nine other members of the pro-Khalistani outfit, including one of his uncles, have been detained in Dibrugarh jail since March 19 of the previous year. They were arrested under the National Security Act from various parts of Punjab following a crackdown on the outfit.
