The minor son of a prominent Pune businessman, responsible for the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two IT professionals when he collided with them using his Porsche on May 19, has confessed to authorities that he was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to sources familiar with the matter.
During questioning, the minor admitted to being under the influence of alcohol while driving, although he expressed difficulty in recalling all the details of the events leading up to the accident.
Meanwhile, in a related development, a Pune court has granted police custody of the boy's parents, Shivani Agarwal and Vishal Agarwal, until June 5. They face charges related to evidence tampering, specifically altering blood samples.
The 17-year-old, hailing from a well-connected family in Pune, tragically struck and killed two IT professionals riding a motorcycle in the Kalyani Nagar area of the city. Subsequent efforts were made to dispute claims of the boy's intoxication, including the alleged swapping of blood samples to conceal the truth.
CCTV footage emerged showing the minor consuming alcohol at a pub shortly before the accident. However, attempts were made to manipulate evidence, including swapping the boy's blood sample with his mother's under the direction of his father and through alleged bribery of hospital staff.
The Agarwal couple is accused of conspiring to destroy evidence by tampering with blood samples at a state-run hospital.
The police have initiated multiple cases in connection with the incident, including one related to the accident itself, another against the establishment that purportedly served alcohol to the minor, and a third involving coercion of the family driver to falsely claim responsibility for the accident.
In addition to the boy's parents, his grandfather has also been apprehended. Furthermore, two doctors from Sassoon General Hospital and an employee have been detained over allegations of manipulating blood samples.
Given the significant public outcry following the incident, the police have deployed considerable resources, forming numerous teams comprising over 100 personnel to thoroughly investigate all aspects of the case.
