Supreme Court halts "Hamare Baarah" movie distribution because teaser so offensive

The Supreme Court has temporarily halted the release of the film "Hamare Baarah" until the case is resolved by the Bombay High Court. On Thursday, the Supreme Court suspended the film's screening, having reviewed the teaser and found it "offensive."

"We have watched the movie trailer this morning, and all the offensive dialogues are present in the trailer," the court stated in its order.

The apex court emphasized that the teaser contained "objectionable materials" and acknowledged allegations that the film is derogatory towards the Islamic faith, particularly targeting married Muslim women.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a plea that challenged the Bombay High Court's decision to allow the film's release.

The bench instructed the Bombay High Court to expedite its decision on the petition filed by Azhar Basha Tamboli.

Advocate Fauzia Shakil, representing the petitioner, argued that the High Court had lifted the stay on the film's release through an "unreasoned order."

"The high court should not have directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to form a committee, as the CBFC was an interested party in the litigation," she told news agency PTI.

Earlier this week, Annu Kapoor's film "Hamare Baarah" was also banned in Karnataka.
