The majority of Indian students with US visas come from the eastern region: US official

### Increased Interest in US Education from Eastern and Northeastern India

A significant number of students from the eastern and northeastern regions of India are applying for student visas to study in the United States, according to Melinda Pavek, the US Consul in Kolkata. Her comments were made during the 8th Annual Student Visa Day in Kolkata, where she highlighted the growing trend and the unprecedented increase in student visa applications from these regions.

### Record-Breaking Student Visa Issuance

- **High Numbers of Indian Students**: There are around 270,000 Indian students currently in the US, making up more than a quarter of the total international students in the country.
- **Record-Breaking Visa Issuance**: In 2023, the US embassy issued 140,000 student visas, a record number. The trend is expected to continue in 2024, with the embassy starting interviews earlier to accommodate the surge.
- **Top Processing Posts in India**: The top four student visa processing posts worldwide in 2023 were all located in India. The number of visas issued in 2023 exceeded the combined totals of 2018, 2019, and 2020.

### Embassy Efforts to Manage Demand

- **Extended Visa Season**: The US Embassy and Consulates in India have extended the student visa season for 2024 to manage the increasing demand.
- **Reduced Waiting Time**: Over the past year, the embassy has reduced the waiting time for visa appointments by more than 70%.

### Prioritizing Genuine Students

Melinda Pavek reassured that the US is committed to welcoming genuine students and does not intend to turn away any deserving applicants. The embassy's efforts reflect the priority placed on facilitating student travel and addressing the growing interest in higher education opportunities in the US.

### Education and Communication Initiatives

- **Emphasis on Degrees Over Costs**: Pavek emphasized the importance of focusing on obtaining valuable degrees rather than the financial burden of studying at prestigious institutions.
- **Specialized Training**: The US consulate is providing communication training to women entrepreneurs from marginalized communities, helping them develop skills to write business plans and improve their business communication.

### Fields of Study

Indian students are particularly interested in studying computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), engineering, chemistry, and physics in the US.

### Daylong Event Success

On June 13, the US Consular Team conducted interviews with over 3,900 student visa applicants across India, underscoring the scale of interest and the efforts to streamline the process for prospective students.

In conclusion, the substantial increase in student visa applications from India, particularly from the eastern and northeastern regions, highlights the strong interest in US higher education. The US embassy's proactive measures to accommodate this demand demonstrate a commitment to supporting Indian students' educational aspirations.
