In a daring daylight heist, a jewelry store in Asansol's Raniganj district was robbed on Sunday, resulting in a shootout with the police. Eight young men, aged between 22 and 25, executed the robbery, with CCTV footage revealing their methodical and violent approach.
The CCTV cameras captured the robbers overpowering the store's security guard and seizing his firearm. They then brandished an assortment of guns and held the staff and customers at gunpoint while they looted the store. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) reported that the swift response from nearby police units led to a confrontation between the officers and the robbers.
Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Sripur, who was nearby, reached the scene immediately after receiving the robbery alert. A patrolling party also arrived quickly, culminating in a shootout with the suspects. Despite the police response, the robbers managed to flee on motorbikes with a significant amount of jewelry. However, in their rush, they left behind a bag containing additional stolen items.
One of the suspects was injured during the shootout, and another was apprehended with assistance from the Giridih police in neighboring Jharkhand. The hunt for the remaining gang members is ongoing.Â
"The exact value of the stolen goods is yet to be determined, pending a detailed inventory from the jewelry store," the DCP said. "We have recovered the security guard's firearm abandoned near the scene, and an investigation is underway."
Police have increased patrols in the area and are meticulously reviewing CCTV footage to identify and capture the remaining suspects.
