A 3-year-old in Louisiana uses his father's rifle to shoot himself in the face

A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Hammond, Louisiana, where a 3-year-old boy tragically lost his life after accidentally shooting himself in the face. The devastating event occurred when the toddler discovered his father's firearm positioned between a box-spring bed and a mattress in a bedroom. Shockingly, the gun was within reach and at eye level for the young child, underscoring a critical oversight in firearm safety.

Reports indicate that at the time of the shooting, there was also a 5-year-old present in the home. Despite immediate efforts by the father and emergency responders to save the child, their attempts were ultimately unsuccessful, as confirmed by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

As of now, no charges have been filed against the father. However, authorities are considering negligence charges as part of their thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to the tragic incident.

Sheriff Gerald Sticker expressed a poignant plea for firearm safety in households, particularly those with young children. He emphasized the paramount importance of securely storing firearms, recommending the use of lock boxes and trigger locks to prevent such preventable accidents from occurring in the future.

The incident unfolded around 1 pm on Wednesday, July 17, at a residence on Red Fox Drive in Hammond, Louisiana. This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the profound consequences of inadequate firearm safety measures and highlights the urgent need for responsible gun ownership and storage practices in all homes.
