A critically injured crew member was evacuated from a motor tanker off the coast of Gujarat

On July 21, 2024, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded in the choppy waters off Mangrol, Gujarat, as the Indian Coast Guard sprang into action to evacuate a critically ill crew member from the Motor Tanker Zeal. This tanker, flying the flag of the Gabon Republic, found itself a reluctant participant in an emergency situation when one of its Indian crew members fell seriously ill. The individual was suffering from a severe medical condition characterized by a dangerously low pulse and numbness in the lower body, conditions that necessitated immediate evacuation for urgent medical care.

The operation was launched at dawn from the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Porbandar, where an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) was swiftly deployed despite challenging weather conditions. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent seas posed formidable obstacles, but the ALH crew demonstrated exceptional skill and precision in navigating to the precise coordinates of the Motor Tanker Zeal, positioned approximately 20 kilometers offshore.

Navigating through adverse weather conditions, the Coast Guard ALH maintained a steady hover over the vessel, ensuring optimal positioning for the safe deployment of a rescue basket. This crucial maneuver, executed with precision and expertise, allowed for the successful extraction of the critically ill crew member from the tanker's deck.

The seamless execution of the rescue mission underscored the Coast Guard's unwavering commitment to maritime safety and emergency response. The ALH crew's ability to operate effectively under adverse weather conditions highlighted their rigorous training and proficiency in aerial operations.

Following the successful extraction, the patient was airlifted and swiftly transported to Porbandar, where further medical attention awaited. The Coast Guard's swift and efficient response in retrieving and evacuating the crew members exemplified their dedication to preserving life at sea and their capability to respond promptly to maritime emergencies.

This incident serves as a testament to the professionalism, preparedness, and expertise of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding maritime operations and ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers in distress.
