A Kanpur family's electricity bill of Rs 3.9 lakh is for the use of a fridge and cooler

A family residing in Kanpur Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh, has been served a nearly four lakh rupees electricity bill due to a technical glitch. Chandrashekhar, the head of the household, was shocked to find the bill amounting to Rs 3.9 lakh after approaching the local electricity department. His bill had been on hold for four to five months.

Chandrashekhar, who lives with his family in a kutcha house with a tin shade, reported using only one cooler, one refrigerator, and two fans. The inflated bill came as a surprise given their limited electricity usage.

Srikant Rangeela, the media in charge of the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (Kesco), explained that the issue arose from a technical fault in the calculating system due to changes made to Kesco's server. This fault affected some electricity meters, causing incorrect data registration.

Rangeela assured that the problem would be resolved soon and that Chandrashekhar would not be required to pay the inflated bill. The electricity department is aware of the issue and is working to correct it.
