In a tragic incident in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, Azgar Mollah was beaten to death by a group of people who suspected him of theft. This incident occurred despite recent directives from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the state police to intensify vigilance against mob violence.
Azgar Mollah, a resident of Phoolbari, was attacked early on Sunday near a police station. The police allegedly did not respond promptly, and Azgar's body remained on the road until locals eventually intervened and recovered it.
Locals in the area expressed frustration over increasing theft incidents, which they attributed to inadequate security measures despite having a night guard. They claimed that Azgar was caught, tied up, and beaten by residents who believed he was involved in the theft. He lost consciousness during the assault and later died from his injuries.
Following the incident, relatives of Azgar arrived at the scene seeking answers about what led to the brutal attack.
This incident adds to a series of mob violence cases recently reported in West Bengal, prompting public and political outcry. The state government, responding to these incidents, has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the victims' families and pledged to provide the victim's next of kin with a home guard job.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has emphasized the need for stringent action against perpetrators of mob violence and directed law enforcement agencies to enhance vigilance to prevent such incidents in the future.
