In the wake of President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, Kamala Harris' campaign has witnessed a remarkable influx of financial support, raising USD 81 million within the first 24 hours. This fundraising effort saw contributions from over 888,000 grassroots donors, with 60 percent making their first donation of the 2024 cycle.Â
Campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz highlighted the significance of this support, indicating a strong groundswell behind Harris and contrasting her vision for the American people with the agenda of her Republican rival, Donald Trump. The campaign's impressive haul adds to an already substantial war chest, and the 24-hour raise is noted as the highest in history for any candidate.
The surge in donations was accompanied by a notable increase in recurring donors and a doubling of Harris' social media following. Harris' campaign also received endorsements from key figures, including former President Bill Clinton and an overwhelming majority of state Democratic Party chairs, bolstering her position as the presumptive Democratic nominee.Â
Despite this momentum, Harris still needs to be formally elected by the party's delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, scheduled for August 19-22.
