India has issued an advisory to its nationals and students residing in Bangladesh, urging them to limit their movements outside their residences due to ongoing violence related to protests over the quota system.
The advisory highlights the current situation in Bangladesh, advising Indian community members and students to avoid travel and minimize movement outside their living premises. It also provides emergency contact numbers for assistance through the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions.
The unrest stems from student protests demanding reforms in the government job quota system, resulting in clashes with security forces that have claimed the lives of at least six people, including four students, across various parts of the country.
In response to the protests, student organizers announced a nationwide shutdown, with most establishments closed except for hospitals and emergency services, and restricted movement except for ambulance operations. Paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops were deployed in major cities alongside riot police deployed on university campuses.
The advisory underscores the volatile situation and advises caution to Indian nationals and students in Bangladesh amid the ongoing unrest.
