BJP National Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for referring to Diljit Dosanjh as a 'Punjabi singer' instead of an 'Indian singer' in a social media post, calling it 'deliberate mischief through wordplay.'
Trudeau made a surprise appearance at Diljit’s concert venue in Toronto. Sharing a photo of himself with Diljit, Trudeau wrote on X, "Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show. Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a superpower."
Sirsa responded by correcting Trudeau, saying, "Let me correct this, Mr. Prime Minister- where one guy from INDIA can make history and sell out stadiums." He further accused Trudeau of overshadowing the gesture of lauding Diljit with "deliberate mischief through wordplay."
Diljit Dosanjh also commented on the event, writing on X, "Diversity is Canada's strength." He added, "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to check out history in the making: we sold out the Rogers Centre!" and shared a video of their meeting.
Relations between India and Canada have been strained following Trudeau's allegations of India's involvement in the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, and subsequent accusations by New Delhi of Canada providing a safe haven for Khalistani terrorists.
