Brother of the Trinamool strongman in Bengal arrested for holding kangaroo courts

Khalek, the brother of a prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader named Abdul, has been arrested by police following numerous complaints of conducting kangaroo courts in Sujali GP, Islampur, and North Dinajpur districts.

Local villagers have accused Khalek of organizing these kangaroo courts for an extended period, where he allegedly meted out punishments to residents based on arbitrary judgments. One such incident, captured on video, shows a person being compelled to do sit-ups during one of these unauthorized judicial proceedings, which subsequently went viral on social media.

Recently, another TMC figure, Tajjimul Haque (also known as JCB), faced arrest after a video circulated online showing him physically disciplining a couple in a kangaroo court held in Uttar Dinajpur district. The footage depicted Haque repeatedly striking the couple with a bamboo stick while onlookers encircled them. This incident sparked widespread condemnation from opposition parties in West Bengal.

Haque was apprehended on June 30 and subsequently remanded in police custody for five days after appearing before a local court. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the TMC, alleging that such incidents reflect a form of "Taliban rule" or "Sharia law" being enforced in the state. Additionally, BJP members have claimed that Haque has ties to Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahaman, who purportedly defended him despite public disapproval from the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC.
