Five people are hurt after an SUV collides with a dormant geyser in Yellowstone National Park, US

Five individuals managed to escape after their SUV veered off the road and plunged into an inactive geyser's hot, acidic pond at Yellowstone National Park. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, prompting a response from park officials who confirmed that all passengers self-rescued from the 105-degree Fahrenheit water. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.

According to park spokesperson Morgan Warthin, the SUV remained submerged in nine feet of water until it was extracted, requiring a temporary closure of the road for approximately two hours on Friday. The geyser involved, known as the Semi-Centennial Geyser, has not been active since a major eruption in 1922. Situated near Roaring Mountain between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction, the geyser's inactive status did not mitigate the dangerous conditions of its acidic pond.

Names of the individuals involved have not been disclosed as park officials continue their investigation into the incident.
