Government workers in Assam would receive time off to see parents and in-laws

The Assam government has announced a special provision of two days of casual leave in November for state employees to spend time with their parents or parents-in-law, according to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). This initiative, introduced under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, emphasizes the importance of honoring and caring for ageing parents and in-laws.

The leave days are scheduled for November 6 and 8, 2024, and are intended exclusively for spending time with parents or parents-in-law, not for personal leisure activities. Employees can combine these special leaves with the holiday for Chhath Puja on November 7, the second Saturday on November 9, and Sunday on November 10, creating a longer period for family time.

However, the leave is not available to employees who do not have parents or parents-in-law, and those working in essential services will need to avail the leave in a phased manner to ensure uninterrupted service. This policy, initially announced by Chief Minister Sarma in his first Independence Day speech after taking office in 2021, aims to foster family bonds and promote respect and care for elderly family members among government employees.
