"High Court order illegal," says the ED in its appeal to the Supreme Court against Hemant Soren's release

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) approached the Supreme Court on Monday, challenging the bail granted to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

The ED argued that the Jharkhand High Court's decision to grant bail to Soren was "illegal."

In its plea, the ED contended that the High Court had "erred" in determining that there was no prima facie case against Hemant Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Significantly, Soren was released from Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi on June 28, following the High Court's decision to grant him bail in connection with a money laundering case linked to a land scam.

Following his release, former Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM leader Champai Soren resigned from his position. Hemant Soren then moved a confidence motion in the Assembly and was reinstated as the Chief Minister after winning the trust vote.

Hemant Soren had been arrested on January 31 at the Ranchi Raj Bhavan, shortly after resigning as Chief Minister.

It is noteworthy that over 25 individuals, including Soren, IAS officer and former Ranchi deputy commissioner Chhavi Ranjan, and Bhanu Pratap Prasad, were arrested by the ED in connection with the land scam earlier this year.

At the time of his arrest, Soren had denied the charges, claiming that the money laundering case was fabricated by the BJP-led central government as part of a political vendetta against him.
