The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania has sparked investigations into the security protocols of the US Secret Service. The incident occurred on July 13, 2024, during a campaign event where Trump was delivering a speech. A 20-year-old gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to position himself on a nearby roof with a clear line of sight to the stage where Trump was speaking. Despite heightened security measures due to prior threats against Trump's life, including one from Iran, the gunman was able to get within approximately 135 meters (157 yards) of the stage before opening fire.
Secret Service agents swiftly responded, escorting Trump off the stage to safety while agency snipers neutralized the shooter. Trump sustained a minor injury, with the upper part of his right ear being pierced. Tragically, one rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically wounded in the shooting.
In response to the incident, both the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general and President Joe Biden initiated separate investigations into the Secret Service's handling of security at the rally. The inspector general's investigation aims to evaluate the Secret Service's process for securing the event, focusing on how the security breach occurred despite the heightened precautions in place.
Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and emphasized the agency's commitment to fully cooperate with the investigations. She assured that the agency would work closely with congressional committees to thoroughly understand the circumstances of the shooting and to implement measures that would prevent similar incidents in the future.
