Indian student in the US serves 12 years in prison for attempting to acquire sex with a 13-year-old

A 32-year-old Indian national, Upendra Aduru, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for attempting to engage in illegal sexual activities with a minor. Aduru, who was in the US on a student visa, was convicted after he communicated with an undercover detective posing as a 13-year-old girl via social media.

Between September 20, 2022, and October 6, 2022, Aduru engaged in numerous conversations with the detective, expressing a desire for sexual activities and sending explicit adult images. He arranged a meeting with the supposed minor and traveled to a park in Millcreek Township, where he was arrested upon arrival. Investigators found evidence of his communications with the undercover detective on his phone.

This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to address the increasing concerns of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
