A fire broke out aboard the INS Brahmaputra, an Indian Navy frigate, while it was undergoing maintenance at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard. Officials reported that a junior sailor is currently missing, and rescue operations are underway to locate him.
The multi-role frigate was in the middle of a refit when the fire erupted. The ship's crew, supported by firefighters from the Naval Dockyard and other ships in the harbor, managed to bring the blaze under control by Monday morning. Following the fire, sanitization checks were conducted to assess any residual risk.
Despite the successful control of the fire, the ship began to list severely to the port side later in the afternoon. Efforts to correct the listing and stabilize the vessel have so far been unsuccessful. The ship remains tilted and is resting on one side at its berth. Fortunately, no additional casualties have been reported.
The Indian Navy has launched an inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident and to determine the cause of the ship's severe listing.
