Joint military drill "Nomadic Elephant" between Mongolia and India gets underway in Meghalaya



The 16th edition of the Joint Military Exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ between the armies of India and Mongolia has commenced in Umroi, Meghalaya. This exercise, scheduled from today until July 16, 2024, aims to enhance joint military capabilities specifically focused on counter-urgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains.

The Indian contingent, comprising 45 personnel from a battalion of 'Sikkim Scouts' along with members from other arms and services, is collaborating with their Mongolian counterparts from the 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion.

The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Dambajavyn Ganbold, Ambassador of Mongolia to India, and Major General Prasanna Joshi, the General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area of the Indian Army. The exercise, named 'Nomadic Elephant', marks the continuation of bilateral military cooperation between India and Mongolia, with the last exercise held in July 2023.

According to the official statement from the Union Defence Ministry, the exercise will include tactical drills such as Response to a Terrorist Action, Establishment of a Joint Command Post, Intelligence and Surveillance Centre Operations, Securing of Helipads, Small Team Insertion and Extraction, Special Heliborne Operations, Cordon & Search Operations, and Deployment of Drones and Counter Drone Systems.

The closing ceremony on July 16, 2024, will be attended by Major General Gyanbyamba Sunrev, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Mongolia, and Lieutenant General Zubin A Minwalla, General Officer Commanding 33 Corps of the Indian Army.

Exercise Nomadic Elephant serves as a platform for India and Mongolia to exchange best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for joint military operations, thereby strengthening their bilateral military ties and operational capabilities.
