Kerala sanitation worker reported missing for 46 hours, discovered dead in canal

The body of a sanitation worker, Joy, who went missing on July 13 while cleaning the Amayizhanchan canal in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was found on Monday morning in a different canal.

After Joy was swept away on Saturday, a large search and rescue operation was launched by the Indian Navy, local police, fire brigade, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The decomposed body was discovered by other corporation sanitation workers in the canal on the Pazhavangadi-Thakaraparambu-Vanchiyoor road, about a kilometer from where he had disappeared. They immediately informed the police and the ward councilor, and the body was sent to a hospital for further examination.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences, saying, "Joy's body, which was missing since Saturday, was found this morning near Thakaraparambu-Vanchiyoor. I convey my deepest condolences and grief over Joy's tragic death. I share the grief of the family members."

He acknowledged the efforts of all government agencies involved in the search operation, noting that various departments coordinated the rescue, utilizing technology such as gen robotics. The Fire Force, scuba diving team, NDRF, police, Navy's expert team, and sanitation workers worked tirelessly together. "We express our heartfelt gratitude to all of them for their service," the Chief Minister added.
