MK Stalin promises assistance and provides helpline numbers for Tamils stranded in Bangladesh

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has instructed officials to extend necessary assistance to state residents affected by the recent violence in Bangladesh, where clashes between security forces and student protesters over government job quotas have led to significant unrest. A nationwide curfew has been imposed in Bangladesh following the escalation of violence, resulting in over 115 fatalities.

In response to the situation, the Tamil Nadu government has launched three 24x7 toll-free helpline numbers to facilitate aid for its residents stranded in Bangladesh. Chief Minister Stalin emphasized the importance of gathering details about Tamil Nadu residents in distress and ensuring they receive all possible support.

Acknowledging the tense conditions in Bangladesh, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) stated that Tamils in the country have reported difficulties returning to their home state due to the unrest. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh has advised Indian nationals to limit their local movements and stay within their residential areas for safety.

Tamil Nadu state officials have promptly contacted the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to obtain specific information about Tamil Nadu residents affected by the unrest. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs has facilitated the return of nearly 1,000 Indian students from Bangladesh, with 778 students returning via land borders and approximately 200 through regular flight services from Dhaka and Chittagong airports.

The Indian High Commission has issued advisories urging Indian citizens in Bangladesh to refrain from unnecessary travel and minimize their movements outside their residences amid the ongoing volatile situation. As per estimates from the High Commission, there are approximately 7,000 Indians currently residing in Bangladesh.

The Tamil Nadu government remains committed to providing necessary assistance to its residents affected by the unrest in Bangladesh, ensuring their safety and well-being during this challenging period.
