The BJP demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he made derogatory remarks against Hindus during his first speech as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi's sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, supported him by stating that he would never speak against Hindus, emphasizing that his remarks were directed at the BJP and its leaders.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi displayed portraits of Lord Shiva, Guru Nanak, and Jesus Christ in the Lok Sabha, symbolizing his message of fearlessness and non-violence. This action was opposed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. During his speech, Rahul Gandhi remarked that those who claim to be Hindu often promote violence, hatred, and falsehood, adding, "You're not Hindu by any means."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi swiftly responded, calling the accusation against the entire Hindu community a serious charge. Rahul Gandhi clarified that his criticism was directed at the BJP and RSS, not the entire Hindu community.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah subsequently demanded Rahul Gandhi's apology to the House and the nation for allegedly hurting the sentiments of millions of Hindus. He also referenced historical events like the Emergency and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to criticize Congress's record on violence.
This exchange highlighted deep political divisions and accusations between the BJP and Congress, particularly concerning issues of religious identity and political rhetoric.
