National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma stated that the derogatory comment made about Smriti Singh, the widow of Siachen hero Captain Anshuman Singh, may have originated from Pakistan. The NCW had previously taken up the issue on its own and lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police, which resulted in a case being filed under charges of insulting a woman's modesty and publishing obscene material online.
Rekha Sharma, speaking to ANI, described the comment as "very low-rated" and noted that an FIR had been filed against the person responsible, who is suspected to be from Pakistan. Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, for his bravery during a fire at an army camp in the Siachen Glacier last year. His widow, Smriti Singh, and mother accepted the award from President Droupadi Murmu on July 5.
The NCW's complaint followed social media outrage after a disrespectful comment was posted on a photo of Smriti Singh receiving the award. The Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit has registered an FIR and is seeking details about the social media account responsible for the comment. The NCW has demanded a swift investigation and a report on the action taken within three days.
Rekha Sharma emphasized that the NCW is taking such comments very seriously and is filing complaints with the police to ensure FIRs are registered in such cases. In response to allegations by Captain Singh's father, Ravi Pratap Singh, that Smriti Singh took the gallantry award and other belongings of their son to her home in Punjab’s Gurdaspur, Sharma urged both sides to resolve any issues through dialogue.
