Pakistan: Bushra Bibi's and Imran Khan's illegal marriage conviction is overturned

In a significant development, a Pakistani court on Saturday acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the "un-Islamic marriage" case, which was the sole reason for Khan's incarceration. The case stemmed from allegations that the couple had married during Bushra Bibi’s Iddat period, a period in Islam when a woman cannot remarry shortly after divorce or the death of her husband.

The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka in Islamabad after earlier reserving judgment on the matter. The judge acquitted Khan, 71, and Bushra, 49, stating that if there were no other cases pending against them, they should be released from custody immediately.

This case had been pivotal as it was the only legal matter keeping Imran Khan detained, following the suspension of his sentence in the Toshakhana corruption case and his acquittal in the cipher case.
