Seventeen days have passed since two bridges in Siwan, Bihar, collapsed in the rain

In Bihar's Siwan district, two bridges collapsed on Wednesday amid heavy rainfall, marking the seventh such incident in the state over the past 15 days. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.

The bridges, located in the Deoria block, connected several villages with Mahrajganj and were constructed over the river Gandaki. Their collapse has significantly disrupted traffic and human movement in the area.

One of the collapsed bridges was built in 1998 with funds from then-MP Prabhunath Singh, costing Rs 6 lakh. The other bridge, constructed in 2004 from the same funds, cost Rs 10 lakh. Neither bridge had been repaired since its construction.

Villagers believe that the heavy rainfall in recent days, combined with the surge in the river Gandaki, likely weakened the bridge structures, leading to their collapse.

This incident follows another bridge collapse in Siwan just 11 days earlier, highlighting the increasing concerns about infrastructure stability in Bihar. On June 22, a portion of a bridge collapsed in the Darounda area. Similar incidents have also been reported in districts like Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj, prompting the Bihar government to form a high-level committee to investigate these occurrences.
