Ashwin Ramaswami, a Gen-Z Indian-American Democratic Party candidate, has received an endorsement from US Senator Jon Ossoff for the Georgia State Senate seat in District 48. Ramaswami aims to challenge and unseat the current Republican State Senator Shawn Still, who was indicted alongside former President Donald Trump about the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.
Jon Ossoff, an American politician serving as the senior United States senator from Georgia since 2021 and affiliated with the Democratic Party, praised Ramaswami for his commitment to democracy and his constituents. Ossoff, who has a background as a documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist, highlighted the stark contrast between Ramaswami, a former election security expert, and his opponent, Shawn Still, whom he described as a Make America Great Again (MAGA) politician involved in efforts to undermine electoral integrity.
Ramaswami expressed his gratitude for Ossoff’s support, emphasizing the need to counter far-right influences in state politics. If elected, Ramaswami plans to focus on issues such as healthcare, housing, and election security.Â
Ramaswami has left his job in election security at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to run for office. His grassroots campaign has raised over USD 280,000, outpacing his opponent in fundraising efforts.Â
A recent graduate from Georgetown University, Ramaswami aims to become Georgia's youngest elected representative and the first Indian-American to hold this position. His candidacy marks a significant milestone for Generation Z and the Indian-American community in Georgia. Born to parents who immigrated to the US from Tamil Nadu in 1990, Ramaswami represents a new wave of young political leaders. If elected, he would become the first Gen-Z State Senator in Georgia and the only state legislator in Georgia with both a computer science and a law degree.
