The incident at Sri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend, Southeast England, on July 11 has shocked the local community and prompted a swift response from law enforcement and the gurdwara management.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses following the attack. The incident, described as "religiously aggravated" by Kent Police, involved the boy entering the gurdwara and causing disturbance in one of the Darbar Halls. Subsequently, two women suffered cuts and bruises in an assault outside the building. Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries, and the police were able to apprehend the suspect quickly. A bladed weapon was recovered at the scene.
Chief Superintendent Angie Chapman of Kent Police emphasized that while the incident is being treated as religiously aggravated, initial investigations suggest it is not related to terrorism. Nonetheless, police presence remains heightened in the area to reassure and engage with the local community.
The gurdwara's management team reported that their security personnel promptly identified the suspect, leading to immediate police intervention. In response to the incident, the gurdwara organized an "All Sangat Meeting" to address concerns and provide reassurance, confirming that 'Guru Granth Sahib Ji', the holy scripture, was not present in the Darbar Hall during the attack.
The 17-year-old suspect appeared before Maidstone Crown Court and faced charges including attempted grievous bodily harm, assault, threats to kill, and possession of a bladed article. Following his appearance in court, he was bailed but subsequently detained for a mental health assessment. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, July 18, at Medway Youth Court, pending the outcome of his mental health evaluation.
The gurdwara, known as one of the largest outside India, continues to be a pillar of the Sikh community in Gravesend. The incident has sparked concern and solidarity among its members, who have rallied around the gurdwara management during this challenging time.
