The Trinamool MLAs' oath of "violation of the constitution" has the Bengal governor upset

The swearing-in of two newly elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs in West Bengal has sparked a constitutional dispute between the Assembly and Governor CV Ananda Bose. During a special one-day session of the Assembly, Speaker Biman Banerjee administered the oath to Rayat Hossain Sarkar from Bhagwangola and Sayantika Bandopadhyay from Baranagar, defying the Governor's directive. Governor Bose had authorized Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee to perform the ceremony in the Assembly, retracting his initial decision for the ceremony to take place at Raj Bhavan.

Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee, citing propriety in the Speaker's presence, declined to administer the oath. Consequently, Speaker Biman Banerjee stepped in and administered the oath himself. Governor Bose criticized this move, calling it a violation of the Constitution and wrote to President Droupadi Murmu to highlight the issue.

Sayantika Banerjee expressed disappointment over the delay caused by the Governor, emphasizing the need to focus on their legislative duties now that the oath-taking ceremony was completed. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between the Governor and the state Assembly over procedural and constitutional interpretations.
