Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, has declared that the BJP will mark July 21, the Trinamool Congress's Martyr's Day, as a protest day against the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. This decision comes amidst escalating tensions and allegations of post-poll violence.
On this day each year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addresses a public gathering to commemorate the 1993 Kolkata firing incident, where several people were shot during a Youth Congress rally she led.
Adhikari announced the BJP's plans following a recent dharna staged outside Raj Bhavan protesting alleged post-poll violence. The BJP intends to conduct widespread protests across West Bengal, including Kolkata, highlighting concerns over lawlessness in the state.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has criticized the TMC government for its handling of post-poll violence, describing it as a "dance of death" in some regions. He accused the government of obstructing victims from reaching Raj Bhavan, leading to a standoff with police citing Section 144 restrictions.
Adhikari stated that BJP's protest on July 21 will include burning effigies of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim outside police stations. Additionally, the BJP has escalated its demands, now calling for the enforcement of the Disturbed Areas Act in West Bengal, previously advocating for President's rule in the state.
